Out & About Counselling Therapy Areas of Focus
Sexuality & Gender
Being a part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community can provide a sense of community, but it also comes with a unique set of challenges. Whether that’s discovering who you are, dealing with prejudice, or living with internalized shame, let’s work together to get you feeling more comfortable with your identity.
I am also willing to write letters of support for gender-affirming care under the WPATH SoC-8. If you are looking to pursue hormones, surgery, or another form of gender-affirming care, I am happy to write a letter of support for you at NO cost.
ADHD
For those living with ADHD, we know executive dysfunction can be frustrating at best, and debilitating at worst. Let’s explore your symptoms of ADHD and use this knowledge to develop day-to-day strategies that work for you.
People with ADHD are also more prone to experiencing emotions that feel larger or more overwhelming. If you are struggling with navigating or identifying your feelings, we can work together to build your emotional confidence.
It’s also worth mentioning that ADHD is a condition which might not be recognized in childhood, but becomes noticable into adulthood. For people with a “late” diagnosis, there can be feelings of frustration, shame, or even grief about the person they could have been if they were diagnosed sooner. If you find yourself relating to this, I am more than happy to help you navigate these complex feelings.
Autism
As with many forms of neurodivergence, Autism is a spectrum that can influence a variety of ways people go through their lives. Perhaps you feel like people can talk to each other easily and that you lack that ability, or that your response to certain textures or noises is a little stronger than other people’s reactions. Maybe you feel an urge to organize items in a specific way, and experience intense distress when that organization method is disrupted.
Regardless of the symptoms you might experience, let’s work together to build coping strategies that work for you, and learn how to be your true self in your interactions with others.
As Autism has been further researched, people who missed being diagnosed in their youth are recieving “late” diagnoses. This can produce feelings like frustration, sadness, or even a sense of relief with finally having an answer to why they felt different from their peers. If you want a place to navigate a new Autism diagnosis, you are more than welcome to come in and explore those feelings.
OCD
If you’re experiencing the obsessions and compulsions that come with OCD, these can be quite stressful or emotionally painful.
By building coping strategies and getting comfortable in the therapy space, we can get you ready to challenge these thoughts using exposure and response prevention (ERP). Although the name of the method can sound intense, we will work at your pace to make sure we are helping you grow, not overwhelming you.
Sexual Wellness
Feelings of awkwardness, anxiety, or embarrassment are quite normal in people’s sex lives, but they might get in the way of sexual satisfaction when they get too intense. We can work together to explore where these feelings are coming from and the ways we might reduce their impact on your sexual wellbeing.
Of course, strong feelings aren’t the only factor impacting people’s sexual satisfaction. Relationship dynamics, sexual dysfunction, and pain during sex are all factors that can impact us. While some of these issues can be traced back to physical health issues, therapy may help for issues which are produced by people’s thoughts or emotions.
Relationship Challenges
Do you feel that disagreements in your romantic relationship are like a neverending cycle, or that you’ve simply grown distant from your partner during a busy time in your lives? Let’s work together to improve communication, find some ways to grow closer with your partner, and challenge some of those deeper issues which have been influencing the quality of your relationship.
Men’s Issues
Men are often been told to hide their feelings and tough it out, but that’s not sustainable forever. Whether you’re trying to understand your emotions, unlearn expectations that don’t feel right, or just want to explore what being a man means to you, I am more than happy to offer a space for you.
